College made me “Black and White”

Since October I have been taking pictures basically in two colours:  black and white. Well, we can always argue that a black and white image has many, many more than only two colours – all the tones of gray, from light to dark, make the image very diverse. Anyway, I fell in love in all the black & white photographs and I started to look at this kind of photography in a different way than before. I used to think that a monochrome image is sad and I usually considered it as an art. But since we have been bombarded with all of the rich in colour and saturated massages in magazines and ads, I really need to slow down and take a fresh look at the beautiful, dreamy black & white photography. All the pictures below by me.

Hand Painting

There is an amazing Italian artist Guido Daniele, who paints on hands and body. Laying the hands in a right way, he is able to shape a perfectly detailed animal. The realism of these painted animals is almost impossible. In 1990 Guido Daniele added a new artistic experience to his previous ones: using the body painting technique he creates and paints models bodies for different situations such as advertising pictures and commercials, fashion events and exhibitions. His hand painting has even a special name: it is called the Handimals. Take a look at his amazing art. All the pictures are borrowed from his website. Enjoy!

Annie Leibovitz – Life in Pictures

Reading a short biography about an American photographer Annie Leibovitz, I’m surprised how many books has she written as well. The books contains all of her work of course. There’s one book that she published together with Susan Sontag, an american writer and filmmaker. The book is called Women and I’m definitely going to read it soon.

Lana del Rey

Lana del Rey (real name Elisabeth Woolridge Grant) is 26 years old American singer and songwriter. She started performing in american clubs at age 18! Now, her discogrphy includes 3 best selling albums: Lana Del Rey a.k.a. Lizzy Grant (2010), Born To Die (2012) and Paradise (2012). The Born To Die album is definitely my favourite and the song “Blue Jeans” belongs to it. Enjoy listening to one of the most amazing voices on the Earth!

Last year’s Halloween party was probably one of the best parties I’ve ever been to. I didn’t expect it, because I finished work very late, about 8 p.m., and I was running home to get ready for a night while all my friends were already after few drinks. But I made it! I finished my preparation about 9:30 p.m. and we were all ready to go and have a lovely night.

There was a birthday party that we went to first. It wasn’t anything special, but at least we ate a delicious pizza and relaxed a bit with some beer and some bottles of wine (!) before a big night out. We decided to go to one of the clubs in town. After the small “talk party” we went to a Luas station. Al Capone (my friend) and Zombie (my boyfriend) were buying tickets while me (I was a Cat Woman) and my friend Marilyn Monroe were sitting and waiting for them in a train. Suddenly, the train moved, leaving Zombie and Al behind! We were traveling by Luas on a Halloween night without  tickets, without anything.  We sorted it out, getting off the train on a next stop and waiting for the rest of us. It was freezing outside!

Finally, we ended up in The Q Bar on O’Connell Bridge and we stayed there till the morning. It was a lot of dancing and drinking and enjoying!!! My boyfriend (Zombie) won a first price for the best costume (it was a 50 euro gift card from Brown Thomas).

I hope this year’s Halloween Party will be even more exciting. We already have costumes: I’m going to be a Pirate Girl and one of my friends too, my boyfriend will be the Batman and we are going to have a Clown, Spider-man and a Nurse as well. Fingers crossed for an amazing night!!!

Hektor. The best dog in the world.

If I would recommend a dog’s breed for you, that would be definitely a Pug. I’m crazy in love with my little, 5 months old, Hektor and I will never stop telling people: this breed is absolutely gorgeous! Hektor was 2 months old when my boyfriend brought him home. That was a surprise for me, cause I expected to buy a Pug together next week. I came back home and I couldn’t believe, that the cutest dog from magazines and all the images in internet and short films on You Tube is actually in my living room: sleeping and snoring. That was definitely the nicest gift I’ve ever got.

Pugs are very trendy at the moment. They are actually everywhere: on billboards, on TV, on Facebook, in ads. We are laughing with boyfriend, that we’ve got Hektor at the right time. Every time we walk with him down the street, there is no chance to just pass unnoticed. People love him! They stop, caress him and ask questions. And Hektor like it! He’s never aggressive; he never bites anyone.

He’s well trained as well. My boyfriend takes his time to teach him all the tricks and they both enjoy! Hektor is a very clever dog. Once  trained, he remembers all the tricks and is ready to learn more. There’s a very useful guide about training our little puppies here.  It doesn’t only refers to Pugs, cause any other breed can be trained from first months as well. I’m going to quote few very important sentences from this page. If you have a dog, there’s a lot YOU can learn and then teach your beloved one!

Pugs are family dogs – this breed loves having people around. Pugs are gentle with children. This dog loves to play and is always ready, particularly with kids. (…) A trained Pug will listen and can safely be allowed freedom more than an untrained one. It is important to know that a disciplined Pug is more confident is a wonderful smart, soulful and people-oriented companion. (…) Remember socialization is also an important part of the training because you don’t want to end up with a fearful or aggressive Pug. One of the most prevalent qualities of Pug dogs is its intelligence, along with its stubbornness. When you understand the Pug ‘s intelligence and stubbornness, you’ll be able to handle it well, and avoid problems while disciplining and training them. (borrowed from Pugvillage).

About… Portrait

portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer (borrowed from Wikipedia).

Every photographer creates millions of portraits during his/her carrier in the photographic industry. Even if his main activity is taking pictures of beautiful landscapes or items for sale, he will never escape from pictures of people or animals. Anytime we take picture of a friend or even a little kitten, we create portrait and our aim is to show the emotions, behavior and situation in which we have found our model. If we want to take a portrait of a person, we have to engage with our model and convince him/her to look directly at us and show emotions and expressions. I know very well , that portraits with models not looking directly into camera lens work good as well and sometimes tell even more about our model. People’s hands are very important too. Depend on how are they positioned, they can create  very active or thoughtful portrait. Anything that can help to enhance your portrait is a good idea. Just look around what can describe your model? Maybe a guitar if he is a musician or some books if he is a writer. Have fun taking pictures of people/animals! They are never the same! Once you catch a great portrait, you will be proud of it till the end.

Let’s start in B&W

Ela by Kasia Foxińska

This B&W shot of Ela is one of my favourites and comes from the album “Ela as a  Cover Girl” by Kasia Foxińska* from August 2012. The pictures were taken at home. I dream about a big, bright photo studio in the future, but all I have for now is my small, sunny living room. At least it’s sunny.

This is what I really like about people I photograph: the way they pose, the way they engage with me without words. There’s a big power and talent in a photographer if a model is a 100% relaxed and self-confident in a front of camera.  The picture above shows how easy is to take photos and have a nice time at the same time if there is a special connection between a photographer and a model. Connection  made just at the beginning of the photo-shoot. This is definitely a subject for a separate post about a portrait, which I’m going to write soon. Let’s keep in touch.

Why photography?

“Why photography?” Hmmm… Why do I need to study photography and pay so much for a college if almost everyone can take nice pictures and learn for free from thousands of tutorials on You Tube? Why do I want to be a photographer if anyone who has a professional digital SLR can call himself a photographer?

I have been taking pictures for the last 3 years since I’ve got my first professional camera. I have learned a lot, but I am still seeking for improvement. This is why I’ve moved my hobby to the next level. I want to find an answer: “Where to go with my photography?” and “How to take care for my photographic passion to grow it bigger and not to scare it?’ I hope there’s an answer in Griffith College.

My goal for the next few months is to become confident about my camera.  I want to be a 100% sure of my skills anytime I want to take a picture and anytime I will be ask for it. I want to take 20 out of 20 great pictures, not 20 out of 200 I took. I want  to be conscious of my photographic knowledge and use it to take beautiful and sophisticated photographs. I want to meet photographers and start learning from them. I want to be a real photographer.
